The Friendly Beasts

Okay I know I know, Christmas is over (although if you are following the liturgical calendar–all you preachers and preacher’s wives out there raise you hand–you celebrated Epiphany yesterday, so I’m only a day late).  But probably many of you are taking advantage of this time at the beginning of the year to un-Christmas your house, sweep up all the pine needles and prepare for 2014 (!).  However, I couldn’t share this project before Christmas since it was a Christmas present, but it is TOO GOOD not to share.

My older brother welcomed his first child this year, her name is Juliette and she is the first grandchild.  Needless to say, we are all madly in love with the little one, especially my mother.  And really… she is beautiful, so what’s not to love! Mom and I decided to each do a special gift for Juliette for her first Christmas.  I’ll share mine tomorrow, but today is all about the labor of love my mom made for Juliette.  She got this idea to make a soft book out of cloth for Juliette.  At four months old she is hardly ready for real books, but a soft book that she could put in her mouth is perfect! Mom got her inspiration from this book: (if you click on the picture it will take you to amazon where you can see a few pages of it)

As I’ve mentioned before my mother LOVES Christmas (if you missed her house at Christmas, go herehere here and here) and this is one of her most favorite Christmas songs and books.  And just in case you were wondering… I get all my craftiness from my mother.  She doesn’t do projects quite as often as I do, but when she does she knocks them out of the park! And this one was no exception.  Are you ready to see her project?

She cut out two cloth squares for each page and printed off copies of the book to use as a template cutting fabric out for each part. She had a friend who owns an embroidery machine to embroider the words of the book.

She then used iron on interfacing to applique the cutout pieces then used a zigzag stitch to secure them on there.

Once she had all of the applique done she put two right sides together, added a layer of flat quilt batting (similar to this, but obviously my mom didn’t buy it in 90 yard bulk, so it wasn’t nearly that expensive) and then sewed around three edges: top, right side, bottom.

Once she had all of the pages sewn together and turned,  she added a strip of fabric on the left hand side to make a binding, which you can kind of see in the first picture.

Some of the fabrics she used are furry or have different textures so they will be more fun for Juliette to play with.

She worked really hard on this project and it is too cute for words!! I think this is a great labor of love gift for any young children.  Its a totally quiet book, so its great for kids to take with them to places where they need to be silently occupied. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Happy New Year! I hope you are all excited for 2014!

2013 was a wonderful year for me with lots of exciting things happening (most notably our wedding) but I am always excited for a new year and the possibilities it brings.  As I look forward to this year I know it will be a crazy busy one… just the first three months alone will be crazy busy at work, my twin brother is getting married and many other exciting things! I’ve never been much of a resolution kind of girl in the past, but I am really liking the goal setting of my 30 before 30 list so I thought maybe I’d try out the resolution thing here on the blog!

  1. Finish said 30 Before 30 List
  2. Be more positive–I find myself increasingly more cynical and therefore not the person I want to be and I think making a conscious effort to be more positive will have a major impact on that
  3. Get to a healthier me– cook more, workout more, eat less/better
  4. Help other people out–I find myself thinking about really great things I can do for other people: friends, strangers, my husband, family, but rarely do I find myself following through on those ideas… so I’d like to accomplish a few more of them.
  5. Be more reflective–spend more time writing in a journal, praying, meditating

Five feels like a good number, so we’ll stop there.  I realize as I write these that most of these resolutions really center around having more time, which is something I rarely find myself with excess of, so maybe that is my one true resolution… to find more time for the things I care about.

What are your resolutions?

30 Before 30 Update: numero dos

So as 2013 comes to a close I am now 7/12ths (or a little over halfway for you non-math types) through my 29th year and New Years always makes me reflect on what I’ve accomplished this year!  I came up with this 30 before 30 list just a short bit after my 29th birthday and thought New Years would be a great time to update y’all.  I know you are waiting on pins and needles to see if I accomplish my whole list!

My 30 Before 30 list:

  • Run another half marathon I’m kind of marking this off.  I trained and was mostly ready to run this, but the Dallas Marathon was cancelled because of Ice-maggedon. So I kinda half ran it, since the training is half the battle, but I really would love to run another one, so I’ll be registering for another one, but maybe not before my 30th birthday.
  • Start a vegetable garden
  • Build my own built-in-closet (modeled after Sandra’s AWESOME closet)  Because the timing worked out and I got a friends and family discount, we decided to do Elfa in our closet instead of building a built in one… and it was totally the right choice.  It was quick and easy and my closet is STILL organized.
  • Book a trip to Europe with my husband (and maybe a few friends)
  • Find a farmer’s market near my house to visit on a Saturday morning
  • Finish my t-shirt quilt (2+years in the making)
  • Learn to cook 5 new meals  I learned AT LEAST this many during my two weeks of my Whole 30
  • Take my husband to visit my favorite city: Washington DC DONE. And Done.
  • Go see Lion King (kind of cheating… I already have tickets to this… but it’s a show I’ve always wanted to see!)
  • Pay off part of my company debt
  • Finish another sprint triathlon (again… bonus points if I beat my previous time)
  • Build a pergola in my back yard
  • Help my twin brother fix up his house (as payment for letting me use his pool whenever I want!) Blog posts coming next week on this!
  • Spend a Saturday without ever leaving the house… no projects, just laziness.  Thank you Ice-mageddon… but I wouldn’t mind doing this again!
  • Take a weekend getaway to Beaver Creek.  (I bought a couple of free nights at a silent auction… now we just have to use them) Check out our visit here.
  • Go Skiing with the church youth group… as an ‘adult’ sponsor.- I’m signed up and ready to go!
  • Get new Christmas Stockings for my husband and I for our first Christmas as a married couple. See how cute they are?
  • Learn how to put crown molding up in my our house
  • Give 10% to charity or the church for 2013
  • Get my husband certified to Scuba Dive–in progress… he is about to sign up in the spring!
  • Finish changing my name to my married last name… who knew there were so many things to change!?– Just a few more to go! And seriously… American Airlines Miles Program needs more info than my credit card?!
  • Organize the whole house- no seriously… every cupboard, closet, under every bed.
  • Take a spa day with a friend Just did this last Saturday– Thanks Ashley!! And seriously, I think I need this about 3-4 times a year. It was A-MAZ-ING.
  • Host a dinner party
  • Make homemade ice cream
  • Make a wedding book for each set of our parents and ourselves Done… I’ll post about this soon!
  • Save enough money to install double ovens in our kitchen
  • Get to my ideal weight- Working on this…
  • Get better at using my SLR Camera (kinda hard to measure… but maybe I’ll know it when I get there?)
  • Throw a 30th Birthday Party for my twin brother and myself

So I have 14 of the 30 left, and since I’m a little over halfway, I think I’m doing pretty well!  I’ll post a few semi-resolutions tomorrow for New Years! I hope everyone has a wonderful, safe New Years Eve… and I’ll see you in 2014! (Seriously… can you believe its 2014??)
