8 Months!

I think I skipped a 7 month update… oops, sorry guys, life was a bit out of control there for a bit.  I’m slowly but surely getting a grip on my life and getting things put back into order.  I’ll write a whole blog post about that, but we have a different topic today… Taylor! I can’t believe my little nugget is over 8 months old!! (technically she was 8 months last week… but again… just getting life back together, so I’m late… again.)
8 Months old | www.amusingmj.com

I think I probably say this every time, but this is SUCH a fun age! She is laughing and smiling all the time, just on the cusp of crawling across the room, and interested in everything.  She recognizes the people she has spent time with and LOVES both myself and my husband, squealing every time she sees us.

(ps… photographing with the blocks is harder now that she can pick the blocks up and turn them over!) 8 Months old | www.amusingmj.com

We like to play a game with her: Which one do you want? The toy… or whatever is not the toy.  And she picks the Not-a-toy EVERY time.  Lay 2-3 things in front of her… one thing that is not a toy, like cell phone, wipes, marker, calculator, tupperware, etc, and then one to two toys.  She picks something other than her toy every.single.time, without fail.   She is almost always happy, although she is definitely going through a stage of separation anxiety where she cries whenever I leave the room (or walk behind a tall piece of furniture).

She has 3, almost 4 teeth, and has a cute little toothy grin she gives you all the time.  She can scoot a bit, roll over multiple times, and go from laying to sitting to laying down again. I feel like any day now she will just start crawling across the room.  She loves food, and eats almost everything we give her (except for blueberries… she HATES blueberries).  She loves to try to drink out of a glass, but ends up mostly spilling it all down her front.   8 Months old | www.amusingmj.com

She has been at a school that is not my favorite right now, but starts at a better one next week, so I’m excited for her to get back to her permanent routine too!

She has started sleeping well again, which was a struggle during the move and transition.  And she graduated out of her Magic Sleep suit, so she sleeps just in her pajamas and typically on her stomach with her little bum in the air, which is pretty cute.

She also got to watch her dad graduate which was pretty fun! 8 Months old | www.amusingmj.com

And we added Georgia to her list of states visited, since she accompanied me to a work conference.  But its not a bad gig… she got a stuffed dinosaur out of the deal. So that makes 8 states she has visited: Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Virginia, Georgia, and the District of Columbia (and if you count a stopover in Chicago O’Hare-9).  She is one well traveled little girl!

She celebrated her first Valentine’s day, which is a fun tradition in my family.  So we went over to Nanny and Papa’s house, exchanged home made valentines cards and had coffee cake.

We are trying to soak up every minute of this age because it is going by SO FAST!

New House Tour

Alright you guys… I never know when the right time to show the new house is… I mean, I feel like it is so far from being ‘guest ready’ but I also want you guys to see it ASAP!

In true confession, I could have shown you guys the real estate listing photos, but the previous owner had a professional decorator, no kids and no pets, so mine looks pretty ‘lived in’ compared to that, so I’m just going to be selfish and not show them to you guys!! 🙂  We have been in for almost a month, but since then we have taken 3 out of state trips… so its taken a little while to get settled at all.  And we are far from settled, but after a seriously productive weekend… we are feeling like the end is in sight.

We have moved to Kansas, so houses are sort of flipped from the Texas versions… instead of attics, there are basements, and most houses don’t have large second stories because of all the square footage below ground! So in this house almost all of our every day living space is upstairs and our entertaining/storage/extra space is down in the basement.  When I met my husband, being the good Texas boy he was, he had never even been in a basement before… and now we have one of our very own, lucky him!

Anyway, without further ado, the upstairs of our house.  Right when you walk in the front door you have the living room. Right now this has our upholstered ottoman, but we may not have space for it once we add in the two chairs that need to be reupholstered.  When my mother in law downsized her home, she gave us two upholstered wingback chairs that need to be recovered and will be a perfect addition to either side of our fireplace (where the director’s chair is right now).  This rug was a $300 dollar score from Homegoods the week before I moved… talk about perfect timing! I think it looks great in here!

The living room, kitchen and dining room are all one big connected room.  I love being able to watch Taylor play from the kitchen and have people sitting at the bar while I’m cooking.  PS I do plan on writing something on that chalkboard eventually… but you know short little me… that requires a ladder and some dedicated time.  So you know, it’ll happen once upon a never. I’m thinking that I may phase the red accents out of this room after we get the upholstered chairs in and put a smaller coffee table/ottoman there. I’m thinking blue greys will look good with the rug, so I’ll be on the hunt for some great pillows to go on the couch.

The dining room has a great barrel ceiling (according to the real estate listing… who even knew what those were called!?!?), but I love the architectural detail. For now we have my grandmother’s dining set in there and will live with it to see if it doesn’t get banged up too much with a little one.  I love the table and think it is a beautiful set, but I hate to have it ruined with a soon to be toddler on the loose.

The double set of doors leads out to a covered deck that has great sunset views and I can imagine will be the perfect place to relax with a glass of wine all spring and most of summer (but also needs a pressure washing in the WORST way… Thank you Kansas wind and nearby construction!)

This house also has an EXCELLENT walk in pantry.  The plus side of being organized in the last house? It didn’t take long to get things like this settled in and put away.

Our master bedroom is not the GIANT room it was in the last house, but is a perfect size room for us just off the kitchen.  It also has a great view into the backyard for lots of natural light.

One of the things I love about this house are all the little extras… like a heated tile floor and plantation shutters.  The guy who built this (not that long ago) thought of EVERYTHING and did a great job picking out finishes and tiles.  Our master bedroom has his and her sinks (you can only see his in the picture… mine is too dirty to photograph!)

kshousemasterbath Then we have this funny little hallway of our shower and linen closet, master closet (that extends off to the right of this picture) and the laundry room which connects back to the garage hallway and the pantry (which is behind the far, closed door) making a circle back to the kitchen/living room area.  Its a great little area and so far having the master closet so close to the laundry room is AMAZING.   kshousemasterbath1
We also have a little half bath for guests that has a really cool sink! (don’t mind me in the pic!)

Also not pictured on the main floor are the guest room and Taylor’s room.  Taylor’s room is done, but she was napping when I got the chance to take all these photos… and the guest room has no photos because it is a DISASTER area.  I promise I’ll show you that soon!

And check back tomorrow for Taylor’s 8 month update… just a week late!

If: Plano

If:Plano recap | www.amusingmj.com So this weekend my awesome sister-in-law (and some other rockstar ladies) put on a women’s conference called If:Plano.  There was a huge women’s conference in Austin called the If: Gathering.  It is put on some women who have an amazing heart for God and wanted to ask the question If God is real what does that mean for our lives?  But then all across the world other churches are putting on programs called If:Local.  So ours was If:Plano, but there were TONS of others around the US and the world.  Anyway, last year, my sister in law went to Austin and really felt God calling her to put on an If:Local event at our church, so this past year she has been working so hard to bring this even to St Andrew and I was so happy to have been able to be a part of it.  And because I feel like all great events like this need a little decompression and recap, I thought I would share some of my favorite tidbits from the weekend.  And also, they did such an amazing job of making all of the tiny little details beautiful and I wanted to share them with you all! (ps one of my good friends made ALL of those cookies for our gathering! Talk about a labor of love!! She is amazing!)

If: Plano recap | www.amusingmj.com

The event is centered around streaming these talks from the Austin conference and some of them were truly amazing.  I had 4 favorites: Jo Saxton, Eugene Cho, Bianca Olthoff and an Indian woman who spoke about her experience as an abused woman. I’ll talk a little bit more about why I liked them, but one of the things that I realized is that they said some great things, but none of them were so profound that I had never thought of them or been told similar things, but rather that it gave me some time to take a breath, refocus and think about my life, my faith and where God really wants me to be.  It was more a time of allowing myself to Be Still, which lets be honest DOESN’T HAPPEN often enough.  I think it was a God thing that the If:Gathering was this weekend, there was something very powerful about all my worldly possessions being on a truck and out of my reach while I was listening to people talk about how to live a more faithful life.

If: Plano recap | www.amusingmj.com

Alright, some of my favorite thoughts from the weekend (and yes I’m paraphrasing all of these, so apologies if these were just my interpretations of what they said!).

From Jo:

  • Learn to let go of the perfection and need to live up to other people’s standards. Jesus wasn’t insecure.
  • When God is moving, IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE.
  • God doesn’t look at us and say Come on… Get it together, he is instead interested in the renewal of all things
  • Take the resurrection personally. What you see as broken, he sees as beloved.

From Eugene Cho:

  • Sometimes we are more in love with the idea of following Jesus rather than to actually follow in his steps.
  • The world is cacophonous and drowns out the fact that we are the image of God.
  • If you believe that someone is outside of God’s redemptive power of Grace, you need a refresher course on his grace.
  • If you think the grass is greener on the other side, maybe the spirit is telling you to water your own grass!

Bianca: I mostly found Bianca highly entertaining and enjoyed her perspective on the story of Lazarus… and now I will never hear that story without thinking of Martha as a fiery Puerto Rican woman.

The woman in a Sari (someone told me we weren’t supposed to put her name out on the internet… so I’m not calling her by name):

  • Her story as an abused Indian woman was POWERFUL and her work to end slavery across the globe is inspiring.  I want to learn more about IJM and their work.
  • “Sometimes we are willing to let the wound rot instead of being willing to open up to our shame.
  • What we really need is for people to JUST SHOW UP.  If:Plano recap | www.amusingmj.com

It was sort of amazing that the speakers that I expected to be blown away by, I was actually underwhelmed with their talks; but the people I had never heard about were very POWERFUL.  I think there is a lesson in that! We talk about loving the least and the lost, but then our society idolizes certain people and makes us believe that their word, their story is more important than someone else’s.  And I’m definitely not saying their story and their knowledge isn’t important, I just think I sometimes need to be reminded that there is a lot to be learned from EVERYONE in every walk of life.

I think one of my favorite parts of the weekend was the worship music.  We had our local church’s contemporary band play, led by  Shana Saint who has a PHENOMENAL voice.  I LOVE the music from The Well and that band did NOT disappoint.  Listening to a group of women singing “It is well with my soul” and “My chains are gone, I’ve been set free”, sometimes as a declaration, sometimes as a plea, is one of the more amazing experiences.  And it is well with my soul.  If: Plano recap | www.amusingmj.com

The If:Gathering also is a big supporter of Noonday Jewelry and my sister-in-law got to share about how amazing this jewelry is and the marketplace it creates for women in third world countries who are provided a living wage because of the jewelry that is sold through this program… and it is beautiful, fantastic jewelry to boot!

If: Plano recap | www.amusingmj.com

I feel like I have a lot of other thoughts from the weekend as well, but I really appreciated the opportunity to take a break from the busy-ness of my current life and refocus.  One of the things Reese and I have talked about in this moving process is being intentional about our lives in Wichita.  We want to take time to really invest in our family, invest in our new church and invest in some sort of service to the community (yet to be determined).

This weekend also gave me the opportunity to say goodbye (for now) to quite a few of the friends and people from the church who have influenced my husband and I over the past few years.  There was more than one tearful goodbye and the If: Plano felt like the perfect way to close this chapter and start a new one.  I especially loved getting to share the weekend with Becky and my mom! (my twin brother also helped prep/serve during the weekend too, even though it was a women’s conference) I have the best family… church and family family!
