Navy or Coral?

So this is the week we find out the gender of our little bump, if he or she cooperates.  Sidenote: I read an article last week about how we should really stop referring to pregnant women as having a bump because it is negative about their body image or something like that.  But it had never occurred to me to take offense to this phrase, nor can I muster any negative feelings toward the word even after reading the article… so I’m going to continue to refer to it as my bump.

Lots of people have asked us if we are going to find out the gender… and my answer is really… of course! We are two TOTALLY type A personalities that love to plan and research, it never really occurred to us to not find out! I do however really admire the people who don’t find out, that has to be a really special moment after they are born to find out! My brother and sister-in-law didn’t find out, and it was such a fun surprise to find out she was a little girl! But I need to know… so we’ll just be surprised on Wednesday!

But in the meantime… I’m in full on nesting mode over here (which is nice timing since we have a LOT of unpacking, picture hanging, organizing, etc that needs to happen at the new casa).  Part of that has been nursery dreaming! If you follow me on Pinterest you probably noticed that about 2 weeks ago I began pinning nursery’s like crazy to my Baby Board! After a little while I decided to look back at what I had pinned to see if I could see a theme and I noticed that I overwhelmingly preferred neutral nurseries (mostly gray and white).  But that I wanted to add in a little pop of color based on gender! So regardless of gender the base of the room will be gray with white/antique white furniture. Then we will layer on top accents in either Navy or Coral. These are some of the pictures that have been my inspiration (click on the photo or the link below to see the original post):

None of these have major pops of color, but I know I want a little more color in my little one’s life, so here’s my plan:

For a Girl: I know that I am not a big pink or purple person, so if it was a girl I was unlikely to go with a massively pink room (although a few super cute and very girly rooms on pinterest nearly swayed me).  I’ve always gravitated towards more of your primary colors: Red, Blue, Green, etc.  In fact my senior year in college I roomed with two of my best friends in the sorority house, and we just brought along the bedding that we’d had for our previous four years: mine were red sheets with a blue jean duvet cover, Emily’s a pastel and polka dot theme, and Lauren tended toward the bright orange/turquoise and jewel tones.  We then laughed a few years later when our first apartments and homes pretty much followed these same design tendencies! Anyway, back on track to the nursery: I decided if it were a girl I would use coral as my accent color.  I think Coral is such a pretty color, and is definitely girly without being too pink.  And BONUS coral seems to be a VERY popular color this year, so there are tons of cute things at Target and other shops that are just the right color, which should make finding accent pieces much easier!

For a Boy: This should come as no shock to those of you who have been around a while, seen our wedding pictures, or just know me in general… I’m a sucker for Navy and White.  So I tend to gravitate toward a navy theme for a little boy. Not quite nautical, but just one step short.

So, some of the elements will stay the same regardless of gender: the room is already being painted Light French Gray by Sherwin Williams  (in fact, as I speak the whole house is being painted this color except for a few rooms, but more on that later this week), the highboy dresser was a spontaneous purchase when I was shopping in Waco with my sister-in-law, so it is already in the nursery, and I bought a few of these card catalog storage pieces when I was out shopping.  But these have been sort of my inspiration for where I want to go with the nursery… so stay tuned this week to find out if we will be going with Navy or Coral!

A Colorful New Vanity

Y’all… this is one of those projects that I just realized I never shared (took tons of pictures: check. resized and uploaded them: check.  wrote blog post: fail.) But it was SUCH a fun project to do and turned out so great, I need to share it.  But since I am so woefully behind I feel a few clarifications are in order: 1. I did this before I got pregnant… some of the things I used DEFINITELY are not safe for preggos.  2. YES this was done at our old house, so you can join me in remembering what it was like to have a garage free of boxes.  3.  There are A LOT of photos in this post. You have been warned.

Okay, now that that is out of the way, on with the project.  My sister-in-law had a piece of furniture that was given to her by an aunt: a GORGEOUS vanity, but quite a bit outdated and definitely not in Misty’s style.  So she asked if I would have time to fix it up.  After talking, she told me she wanted it in a bright teal color with some dark glazing to make it look a little antiqued.  It was clear that this was the perfect project to try out some chalk paint- specifically Annie Sloan’s Florence.  I was super excited about the opportunity to work on something that is not in my normal color scheme! This is a beautiful color and I love the way it turned out.  But I’m skipping ahead.  Let’s take a look at what we are working with:

mistystable17

mistystable16 Now that I knew what I was looking at, I went to one of the places in Dallas that sells Annie Sloan, and lucked into being in the shop at the same time as the owner: Lady Butterbug‘s husband.  He was already giving some instruction to another newbie, so I (not so) nonchalantly listened in.  Eventually he was telling both of us EXACTLY how to best apply this stuff, what glaze to use, how long to wait, etc.  He was amazing! If you are in McKinney, TX or near one of their other Dallas shops, stop by and check out their stuff.  He clearly is passionate about this paint and happy to share his wisdom with anyone who wants to listen!! I love people like that!

Anyway, I walked out of the shop with a container of the Florence Paint, both clear & dark wax, and a couple of natural bristle brushes to use for application.  (I would still have TONS of paint left over if I hadn’t spilled about half on my garage floor… sorry new house owners! And I have barely put a dent in either of the waxes, so I’ll definitely be using them for more projects after the baby!)

So first up I wiped down/cleaned the piece and then I painted everything with two coats of the Florence chalk paint. After the first coat it looked very streaky and I could see some yellow peeking through, but the second coat definitely made everything look nice and even.

The next step was to apply the clear wax. One of the tips Mr Butterbug (I’m sure that’s not what he likes to be referred to, but I didn’t catch his name) gave us was to not apply the wax too thickly, but to have just a very thin layer.  He recommended a round natural bristle brush to apply.  Then on top of THAT (before it dries… so work in sections) apply the dark wax and then wipe it down with a paper towel.  I used my favorite blue shop towels that I get at Sams.  The easiest way for me to show you this whole process is with the drawers:

1st Step: Wipe them down (and remove hardware)

mistystable11

2nd Step: Chalk Paint (in the photo below they are still wet)

mistystable12

3rd step: brush on clear wax (you can’t see the clear wax in the photo… so just pretend you can see it)

mistystable2 Then comes the 4th and by FAR the scariest step: brush on the dark wax. This step is scary because you have worked so hard on this piece up until now, and you are about to make it look terrible.  But things get worse before they get better, so bear with me:

mistystable8

Then wipe it down with your paper towel, working it into crevices and generally making it look better:

mistystable6

And here is where it is a judgement call on how ‘distressed’ or antiqued you want the piece to look.   mistystable20

And the good news is because you have put the dark wax OVER the clear wax, pretty much you can add more clear wax/dark wax until you get it exactly like you want it.

Then there were two other steps to finishing this project that I left out (But as you can clearly see from the picture above, I had already done this part by the time I finished the drawers).  First, I wanted to spruce up the handles a bit, they definitely had a darker patina to them that was really pretty, but I thought bringing out the brassiness of them would accent this piece well. So I pulled out my can of Brasso and worked some of the grime off of these pieces.  (You can see how they shined up if you skip down to the finished product below)

mistystable13

The other thing I did was freehand paint some of the accents on either corner with some gold craft paint.

After the first coat:

And the second coat, I’m not a perfect painter, and it was definitely harder to stay in the lines than I thought, but I do love the gold accents even if they aren’t perfect because they add a bit of glam to the piece.  And they coordinate so well with the spruced up pulls:

mistystable3

So when it was all said and done, this is what we have:

I did let the piece sit in my garage and ‘cure’ for two weeks before we loaded it up to take over to Misty’s house.  Mr. Butterbug told us that letting it have that cure time would make the piece much less likely to scratch or scuff… and since my brother-in-law and sister-in-law have 9 kiddos running around their house, I thought that sounded like a pretty stellar idea.

I’m pretty proud of how it turned out… and I think they were too!!

Week 17 Bump Update

So I don’t know if it is the way I’m standing, what I ate last week or what, but I feel like I looked more preggo in last weeks bump picture than this, but alas… this is the picture from this week! I also should probably quit taking them after I wake up from my Sunday afternoon naps, but since those don’t feel like they are going away any time soon… this is what we are left with!

On with the update:

week17 Baby’s Size: We will return to the boring vegetable references this week: Baby is the size of a Green Pepper.  Mostly because I love green pepper and no one else had a clever reference I could steal 🙂

Baby’s Progress: Baby is moving around a lot (although I’ve felt a few flutters that *might* be baby movement, it’s awfully hard to tell), and his/her ears are in their final position, but are sticking out of the head more than normal (although if you’ve seen my elementary school pictures this is likely to be a trait that sticks around this little munchkin for a while).

Weight Gain: I’ve gained a half a pound.  And I’ve been eating like a champion lately (thank you trip to Kansas City) We go back to the doctor next week, so this lack of weight gain will definitely be one of my big questions.

Sleep: Sleep hasn’t changed much since last week, so yay for midnight (more like 2 am) trips to the potty.

Milestones: Didn’t really have any major milestones this week, except that I learned that long car trips are going to be increasingly more difficult.  I had to take one for work this week to Kansas City, and I’ll be taking it slow on my road warrior status here in the next few months.

Favorite clothing item of the week: a tunic and leggings that I’ve had for a while, but definitely have some room to grow in it for the next several months!

Symptoms: Fortunately most of the symptoms that the books and websites talk about having in the second trimester haven’t struck too strongly yet (like heartburn, leg cramps, etc).  I’m still holding on to the occasional round of extreme nausea and my sense of smell has never been stronger, but for now I’m grateful to still be able to sleep at night and to have no leg cramps or heartburn yet!

Workout: This was a good week! I returned to my pre-pregnancy Camp Gladiator workout and just did some slight modifications (I didn’t do the exercises where you lay on your back, and mostly went at my own pace), I also accompanied a friend in KC to Overland Park Crossfit on Saturday morning and had a great workout.  Both my friend (who was my partner for the partner exercises) and the instructor knew I was preggo, so we did some slight modifications.  Both workouts felt great, and besides being a little sore (yikes Quads!) it felt great to be working out.  I also managed to get out and take a walk yesterday in the GORGEOUS spring weather which helped stretch out my sore quads.  I hope to keep working out throughout at least the second trimester, but I’m also not pushing myself too hard!
